VERTEBROPLASTY

Vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive spine surgery procedure, which through the use of one or two needles, under a radioscopic guide, inserts semiliquid material inside the vertebral body.

This material solidifies very quickly and makes it possible to strengthen and make the bone structure more stable.

The substance that is injected is a resin which in the jargon is called "cement" and it is a synthetic compound called polymethylmeracrylate (PMMA).
The procedure of vertebroplasty leads to the same results as kyphoplasty, even if the two procedures differ in terms of modality of carrying out.

The operation is performed under local anesthesia through a skin incision so small that it does not require stitches and requires discharge on the same day (day hospital).
The cement is injected and it insinuates itself between the trabeculae of the bone, filling any cavities, then solidifying by consolidating the vertebra.

WHAT IS IT FOR?
Vertebroplasty is the procedure of excellence for the treatment of vertebral fractures, especially those caused by osteoporosis.
The results are noticeable in the minutes following the surgery: the pain substantially decreases or disappears completely. There is also a strengthening of the damaged vertebral structure, in this way it is possible to prevent it from deforming over time due to the excessive weight that weighs on it.

WHEN IS IT RECOMMENDED?
‍Vertebroplasty is especially indicated in cases where patients experience severe pain due to vertebral fractures, most of which are caused by osteoporosis.
Vertebroplasty is also very useful for the treatment of other diseases related to the spine, such as for example benign or malignant vertebral lesions such as: Aneurysmal bone cyst; Symptomatic angioma; Myeloma; Pseudarthrosis; Hemangiomas; Metastases; Giant cell tumors.
